Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network
The Midwest Dragon Boat Festival was pleased to have, as the 2008 Pledge Partner, Root- Pike Watershed Initiative Network.
Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network (WIN) is a grassroots nonprofit organization that provides funding to local projects to solve watershed problems. Root-Pike WIN has fifty skilled and dedicated members that volunteer their time to review proposals and advise grant recipients. Grants are awarded twice a year to projects that are working to improve the Root River, Oak Creek, Pike River and Creek, and adjacent Lake Michigan watersheds. Root-Pike WIN also conducts educational activities to capitalize on the positive impact of the projects they support.
Root-Pike WIN has played a vital role in:
- Opening 25 miles of the Pike River for fish passage;
- Restoring natural areas by removing invasive species;
- Improving water quality be reducing soil erosion; and
- Educating citizens about sources of water pollution.
"Root-Pike WIN is thrilled to be a partner is this great event that celebrates our Great Lake," said Susan Greenfield, Executive Director. "We are honored to be chosen as the Pledge Partner for the 2008 Midwest Dragon Boat Festival and we are looking forward to contributing to the success of this year's festival."
As the Pledge Partner, Root-Pike WIN will be contacting the dragon boat teams to request their support of Root-Pike WIN's mission to protect, restore, and sustain the ecosystem in the watershed through the funding and facilitation of a regional network of locally initiated projects.
